Building a Circular Economy for Agricultural Plastics in Brazil
Author: Andrés da Silva, agricultural engineer, founding partner, EACEA
Plastic is an essential tool in modern agriculture. However, Brazil faces the same challenge as elsewhere: organising the collection and recycling of used agricultural plastics. Let’s have a look at the “Eu Plastifico, NÓS RECICLAMOS!” programme.
Agricultural plastics – such as greenhouse films, mulch films, irrigation tapes, screens, trays and pots -, improve water-use efficiency, protect crops and support productivity. However, these benefits create an end-of-life challenge, as underlined at international level by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), which has called for stronger collaboration and circular solutions.
Recycling is a collective responsibility
This challenge led “EACEA Soluções para Cultivo Protegido” to create “Eu Plastifico, NÓS RECICLAMOS!” (“I Use Plastics, We Recycle!”), a voluntary agricultural-plastics recycling initiative launched in June 2023. Supported by COBAPLA, Revista Plasticultura, IFPA Brazil, IBRAHORT, CATI, ABIQUIM, CLARIANT and industry partners, the program is built around a simple principle: the decision to use plastic may be individual, but recycling is a collective responsibility.
The objective is to move beyond isolated collection campaigns and establish a national, scalable model for reverse logistics. The initiative connects agricultural producers with recyclers, maps the location and volume of available plastic, organises collection and transportation, and tracks material through recycling. The goal is to transform agricultural plastic waste into high-quality post-consumer recycled resin (PCR) with a traceable “pedigree”.
There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don't look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn't anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet. It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. The generated Lorem Ipsum is therefore always free from repetition, injected humour, or non-characteristic words etc.
