Which Mulching for Réunion : BIODOM Project

In Réunion, polyethylene agricultural plastics lack a collection and recovery system. Estimated at 400T/year1, they are essential for all horticultural productions. Plastic mulches account for about 87% of the used agricultural plastic waste (PAU) flows, and they are highly contaminated by agricultural practices, reuse, or pineapple cultivation… In the absence of a solution to properly manage their end-of-life, the industry fears a resurgence of poor practices, such as abandonment or illegal burning.
COLLECTION AND RECYCLING OF PAU: A COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY.
The framework agreement2 between the Ministry of Agriculture and A.D.I.VALOR specifies that, in the French Overseas Territories (DOM), the resources required from A.D.I.VALOR to facilitate the management of agricultural waste cannot replace the individual responsibilities and obligations of marketers, distributors, shareholders, and other A.D.I.VALOR partners. According to local stakeholders: ARIFEL, Armeflhor, the Chamber of Agriculture, Eco-Agri, Qualitropic, A.D.I.VALOR, and the CPA, the funding and logistics for a departmental collection scheme still need to be developed to meet this requirement. Following the development of the BIODOM project3 and its presentation, the CPA and A.D.I.VALOR continue to support local initiatives in line with the commitments made with the authorities.
THE ALTERNATIVE OF BIODEGRADABLE MULCH.
ARIFEL and Armeflhor, key players in the BIODOM project, have continued to promote the use of biodegradable mulches for pineapple cultivation initially, as this crop covers over 350 hectares out of the 3,000 hectares using agricultural plastics.
