Korea University conducted research on scale-up fabrication of a biodegradable PBAT/PLA¹ composite film that a chain extender makes compatible. The developed film holds substantial promise for agricultural applications. How innovation in agriculture is shaping a sustainable path forward? The authors provide Plasticulture Magazine a summary of their study’s results.

In the realm of modern agriculture, plastic mulch films are widely used due to their multiple advantages for crop growth. These films, primarily made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE), aid in conserving soil moisture, regulating soil temperatures, and protecting plants from adverse environmental conditions. Despite their widespread use, the environmental effects of conventional mulch films have become increasingly apparent, with soil contamination emerging as a pressing concern.

What type of blend to choose

To address this problem, researchers have explored biodegradable alternatives such as thermoplastic starch (TPS), polycaprolactone (PCL), and poly(lactic acid) (PLA), among others. Among the various biodegradable materials, poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), a biodegradable aromatic-aliphatic polyester, is a ductile and flexible polymer that exhibits outstanding elongational properties. Moreover, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biocompatible and biodegradable polyester that is superior in tensile strength and stiffness and can be biodegraded in a natural environment. However, its significant brittleness has limited its application.

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don't look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn't anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet. It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. The generated Lorem Ipsum is therefore always free from repetition, injected humour, or non-characteristic words etc.
