Plasticulture in the Greater South-East : the challenge of collection and recycling

A major user of agricultural plastics, the Greater Southeast region of France faces the particularly challenging issue of plastic mulches and their very high contamination rates. This is due to its undeniable status as the “vegetable garden” of France. In response to this challenge, the region is not standing idly by and actively supports technical and industrial innovation.
The Sud-Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region and the Occitanie region include 19 departments. Agricultural production in these areas is highly specialized, and farming practices vary greatly between regions and even between neighboring departments. As a result, estimating the consumption of plasticulture products and the production of used agricultural plastics (UAP) is not an easy task. For this study, Plasticulture Magazine relied on the 2020 Agreste census for PACA and Occitanie, as well as data from A.D.I.VALOR.
Agriculture in the Grand- West of France by region and by sector – in thousands of farms
Characterized by the same diversity of production, regional agriculture in Occitanie remains dominated by crop-specialized farms, excluding viticulture, with cultivated areas comparable to those of the PACA region, covering just over 5,000 hectares. Occitanie’s viticultural production spans more than 16,000 hectares. The PACA region encompasses nearly one million hectares of arable land (field crops), grasslands, and wooded areas, representing one-third of the region’s total surface area, with approximately 3,500 livestock farmers working there.In Occitanie, animal-specialized production remains significant despite a sharp decline since 2010, now covering 25,000 hectares.
