Plasticulture in the Great West

Agriculture in the Greater West of France – Brittany, Normandy, Pays de la Loire – is diverse and heterogeneous in its use of agricultural plastics. Alternative solutions are being developed for several crops to improve the recycling of the most complex agricultural plastics. To open this issue, Elsa Vinuesa of the Plasticulture and Agri-environment Committee gives you a detailed overview of plasticulture in the Great West.
The agricultural area of the Great West covers two-thirds of the land area of this large region made up of Normandy, Brittany and the Pays de la Loire, with some 26,000 farms. The region’s highly diversified activities include arable farming (23% of farms), livestock farming (beef, poultry, pigs), horticulture and market gardening (lamb’s lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, shallots) and arboriculture (apples). Winegrowing remains an exclusively Pays de la Loire issue, with the two Appellations d’Origine Protégée (AOP) Anjou-Saumur and Pays nantais.
Organic farming is highly developed in this large region, covering more than 710,000 hectares and accounting for around 12% of farms.
Agricultural plastic for livestock farming in the Great West
France’s largest region for livestock farming, which accounts for 42% of activity in France (Source Agreste):
- Normandie : 8%
- Pays de la Loire : 10%
- Bretagne : 24%
