Comparison of two tomato cultivation methods under cold tunnels. Summary of the results of four years of experimentation. CPA Technical Days 2012

The South Brittany Horticultural Experimental Station (SEHBS) of the Morbihan Chamber of Agriculture began an experiment in 2007 on different mulching and trellising materials suitable for tomato growing. The long-term objective is to replace non-biodegradable materials made from fossil fuels that are expensive to recycle with biodegradable materials that use only minimal quantities of fossil fuels and require no recycling. The ultimate goal for both soil-based and soilless tomato growers is to be able to shred the entire crop for compost at the end of the cycle. For this experiment, we want to determine the agronomic and economic viability of a fully biodegradable growing system: can it replace traditional growing systems with polyethylene mulch, string, and polypropylene clips?
