Alsace is a highly diversified agricultural region with cereals, livestock farming, market gardening, orchards and hops. It is particularly well known for its wines and vineyards, which stretch all along the Vosges mountains. The VitiVina\u00b9 cooperative explains the life cycle of trellis strings, from installation to the end of their useful life.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Alsace appellation area stretches over 120 km, covering 15,606 hectares of vineyards, representing 3.5% of France’s AOC\u00b2 vineyards and 4.5% of Alsace’s agricultural land.<\/p>\n

Trellising allows the vine shoots to be trained upwards to prevent them from falling under their own weight and deteriorating. Once raised, the branches are secured with two polypropylene strings and a clip, usually made of metal, except in the case of manual trellising, where they may be made of photodegradable materials.<\/p>\n

In Alsace, trellising is mainly carried out mechanically on gently sloping hillsides and flat plots. The row spacing, 1.6 to 2 metres, allows for the passage of machinery, tractors and trellising machines. This is also explained by the associated gains in working time and labour savings. With mechanical trellising, it is thus possible to cover 3 to 4 hectares per day.<\/p>\n
