Since 1998, cooperatives in Lorraine have been organising themselves locally to set up collection schemes for agricultural packaging and then used agricultural plastics. It has been a resounding success, with very high collection rates, and is now a model for others to follow. Two key players explain how it works.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The collection of agricultural waste has historically been initiated by all cooperatives in Lorraine. Today, all cooperatives offer a collection service: in addition to CAL and EMC2, LORCA and the Groupement des Producteurs de Bl\u00e9 (Wheat Producers’ Group) are active in collections for the A.D.I.VALOR sector, alongside collection sites operated by traders.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n


\nPlasticulture Magazine : <\/strong>What is the profile of your members’ farms and what type of agricultural supplies do they use?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Laurence Chon\u00e9 :<\/strong> Our territory is divided between large-scale farming and mixed farming. Livestock farming mainly involves cattle, a third of which are dairy cows, although numbers have been declining in recent years.<\/p>\n

Jean-Pierre Gryta : <\/strong>When it comes to the use of agricultural plastic, we are more interested in livestock farms, which consume large quantities of silage tarpaulins, wrapping films and twine-nets. Across all production sectors, this represents 1,500 members who supply used plastic and empty packaging, with 1,000 tonnes of used film and 500 tonnes of twine and netting collected annually across all our sites. To this must be added empty packaging.<\/p>\n

Laurence Chon\u00e9 : <\/strong>For CAL, this represents 1,200 contributing members and more than 1,000 tonnes of used plastic collected each year, excluding packaging.<\/p>\n
