Drones to protect fawns during mowing : whilst ensuring the best silage quality

R&D is not just about laboratory work. There is also work in the field, and not just on the soil, because nature, including flora and fauna, can also be affected by cultivation techniques. Hence the experiments conducted by Mr F. J. Lichte, President of ERDE, on the protection of fawns during haying.
The proportion of forage harvested as silage has increased steadily in recent decades and improved mechanisation is helping farmers harvest economically. Mowers with a width of up to 11 meters and a speed of up to 15 km/h are extremely dangerous for young wild animals, especially for fawns, that try to protect themselves in their first few weeks with a so-called ducking reflex. Animal welfare as well as silage quality are great incentives for farmers and hunters to save the animals, which is also a legal obligation.
Efficient search by drone in the early hours of the morning
Monitoring the area with a drone in the early hours of the morning before sunrise, when there is still dew in the fields, enables an efficient search for the fawns. About 8 fawns per 100 hectares have been found this way in the past 3 years. This increases by approximately 60-70% the number of fawns saved from the mower compared to any conventional search.
