A circular vision for plasticulture and the future of recycling : a look at Trioworld’s commitment to a sustainable future

Agricultural plastics converters are involved in all aspects of the product life cycle: strategy, eco-design, production and end-of-life. Trioworld recently initiated a strategic shift by becoming more involved in recycling, forging a strong partnership with collection organizations. Andreas Malmberg, Trioworld’s CEO, presented the company’s strategy at the recent European National Collection Schemes Days in Göteborg. He outlines this new direction in Plasticulture Magazine.

Trioworld is investing at a fast pace to make agricultural plastics more circular, and thanks SvepRetur¹ and Ingemar Andersson, CEO of KRS², for encouraging it to take this step.

But why recycle ?

Plastics consumption is increasing by 2-3% a year in developing countries, and to a lesser extent in mature countries. At a time when plastics are so decried, why aren’t alternatives being developed more rapidly? Circularity is becoming crucial, as evidenced by the major moves being made in this direction.

It’s a well-known fact that replacing plastic with another material would, in most cases, have a negative impact on the environment. If, for example, we were to replace the 3 million tonnes of mulching film used each year in agriculture with paper laminates, or an equivalent product, greenhouse gas emissions would be multiplied by 2.6! So there’s no better material for agricultural applications. But in this context, why not opt for biosourced or biodegradable materials? We believe in biosourced materials, but they can’t replace plastic in all applications, and they won’t solve the climate change issue or meet the Green Pact targets. It’s just not possible. It takes 20 years to develop biobased solutions, and we don’t have 20 years… Consequently, recycling is the only way to reach these targets sooner rather than later. That’s why a recycling strategy that include the latest technologies, a network of suppliers and a system approach, is the key to our success. Trioworld is committed to demonstrating. As a company and as an industry, its commitment to recycling and sustainable development. We have 10 years to make a difference. If we don’t change, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans. We must act quickly.

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don't look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn't anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet. It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. The generated Lorem Ipsum is therefore always free from repetition, injected humour, or non-characteristic words etc.
